Two years ago, right before life as we knew it changed dramatically, I threw a holiday party. I slipped into a red dress, painted on a cat eye, and in hopes of channeling the hostess to end all hostesses—Breakfast at Tiffany’s Holly Golightly, of course—had my hair fashioned into a bouffant. It proved to be the ultimate head-swiveling hairstyle, and as we usher in a holiday party season that feels decidedly merrier after a tough year and a half, I can’t help but feel called back to it. It doesn’t hurt that Instagram has been rife with references for an inspired take.
There was the backstage footage at Moschino’s spring 2022 show, where hair legend Danilo put his own spin on the classic teased style—one he called a cross between the famed Breakfast at Tiffany’s ‘do and Cindy Crawford’s ’90s French twist—accented with chunky, contrasting highlights à la Ms. Golightly. And then there was all the glamorous red carpet action, from Lady Gaga’s ultra-sleek iteration punctuated by a set of razor-sharp baby bangs at the New York premiere of House of Gucci to Tessa Thompson’s gravity-defying “breakfast at TT’s” bouffant moment, as hairstylist Lacy Redway called it, at the Gotham Awards.
