When the right designer and celebrity pair up, the results are magic. Every time Jared Leto puts on a Gucci shirt or Jennifer Lopez splashes out in Versace palm print, fashion rejoices. Amongst the younger generation of stars, equally exciting collaborations have emerged—is it truly a Timothée Chalamet outfit without some Haider Ackerman in the mix? But, the most recent fashion Hollywood match up is among the least expected. Friday on Instagram, singer-actress Demi Lovato uploaded a snapshot of her latest look, an edgy mix of logo-print Balenciaga separates from the brand’s pre-fall 2020 collection. The short-sleeved blouse worn with matching wide-leg pants tucked into Ganni’s graphic Chelsea boots made for a striking combination. Clad in head to toe black and white and sporting her newly dyed pastel pixie, Lovato looked undeniably cool.

This isn’t the first time Lovato and her stylist, Siena Montesano, have utilized Demna Gvasalia’s creations. In the past, the star has adapted runway looks to suit her tastes. In November, she took one of the spring/summer 2020 collection’s wool-twill blazers and wore it as a dress. Calling the emerald green look a tribute to Sarah Paulson’s Nurse Ratched when she posted to social media, Lovato made the piece’s oversized shoulders and extreme silhouette seem sultry. Later that month, she gave one of Gvasalia’s printed neon mini-dresses a spin, injecting sex appeal into the ensemble with the addition of stiletto sandals. Even the previews Lovato released this month for her forthcoming YouTube docuseries featured a hint of Balenciaga glamour thanks to a striped navy silk blouse and matching jacquard pants.

All these Demi meets Demna moments have showcased another side to a brand known for its experimental sensibility and irreverent attitude. As Lovato continues to evolve her image, wardrobe, and personal tastes, she’s likely to delve deeper into Gvasalia’s oeuvre. After all, who better to strut around in those jaw-dropping medieval Balenciaga boots than the woman who sang, ‘Confident’?
