For a lot of people, myself included, the draw of a protective style is that you know how your hair is going to act when you wake up. That’s not something that you can really count on when you choose to wear your natural hair. Don’t get me wrong: I love my curls, but there’s just something about the ease of a protective style that’s unmatched. Plus, I’m pretty into the idea of keeping manipulation to a minimum and focusing on growth.
So in case you’re looking for a new look that’ll keep your curls tucked away while also making a statement, our resident braider, Stasha Harris, has got you covered. This week on The Braid Up, we’re introducing you to passion braids—they’re kind of like a goddess-stitch braid hybrid. Trust me when I say that you’ll absolutely love them. Like, get ready to turn heads.
Whether you’re looking for some braids to rock this spring or you’re just trying to pick up a new skill at home, here’s what you need to keep in mind to recreate this style:
1. Use the feed-in method to braid your hair. By gradually weaving the hair extensions into your braids, you’ll get a super seamless and natural look.
2. Curl your ends. Roll the ends of your braids around a curling rod, then dip them into hot water to seal the ends and set your curl.
3. Fluff your braids. Use a needle (or, TBH, your hands) to slightly open up your braid so it’s not as tight. This’ll give your look a more ~carefree~ and boho vibe.
4. Work in a mousse. Not only will this finish off your look by setting it, but a mousse will also add some shine to your braids.
