Best Opening Since ‘Barbie’: ‘Dune 2’ May Be Year’s First Blockbuster

“Dune: Part Two” earned the No. 1 spot at the box office in its opening weekend, bringing in more than $178 million in global sales, according to Box Office Mojo, marking the largest opening weekend for a film since “Barbie” premiered in July.

“Dune: Part Two” earned $81.5 million in 4,000 North American theaters from Friday to Sunday, nearly double what the first “Dune” earned during its 2021 opening weekend, though likely the result of the first film’s simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max, according to Box Office Mojo.

The second installation earned $97 million globally across 71 markets, according to Box Office Mojo.

“Dune: Part Two,” exceeded Warner Bros. expectations in domestic sales as the studio predicted it would open to $65 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to Deadline.

The movie, which stars Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh, has a 94% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 95% score from audiences.

Before weekend box office totals were released, “Dune: Part Two” had an impressive preview earning $12 million during Thursday’s showing. “Dune” earned less than half of that in previews grossing $5.1 million in 2021. The first film’s dual theater and streaming release was prompted by low theater turnout during the pandemic. The first “Dune” movies went to record more than $430 million globally in box office sales. The impressive opening weekend of the “Dune” sequel marks the highest-grossing weekend numbers since “Barbie” premiered in July to more than $300 million worldwide in its opening weekend.

“Dune: Part Two’s” release was delayed five months because of last year’s monthslong actors and writers strikes.

“Bob Marley: One Love” took the second spot at the box office this weekend bringing in $7.4 million domestically in its second weekend in theaters bringing its domestic box office total to $82.7 million, according to Box Office Mojo. “Ordinary Angels” took the No. 3 spot this weekend earning $3.9 million from Friday to Sunday bringing its domestic total to $12.6 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
