Coyuchi’s First-Ever Mattress Is Designed to Encourage Sweet Dreams

Coyuchi is one of our favorite places to buy bedding with the finest organic materials, but the brand has been quietly working on a new launch to support their line of premium textiles. The brand’s first-ever mattress, dubbed the Natural REM bed, debuted earlier this year and I had the pleasure of putting it to the test in the midst of a bedroom overhaul.

My former bed was with me for nearly a decade but was always a little too firm for my taste, even to the point that I would wake up with neck and back pain from the rock-solid surface. As a combination sleeper who rests comfortably on nearly any side, I wanted a bed that would accommodate my ever-changing sleep positions. From my work covering all the mattress types out there, I knew a hybrid model made of springy coils and plush foam materials would be my best bet. Thankfully, Coyuchi’s debut dovetailed with my needs for a soft and supportive sleep surface, and I’ve been blissfully drifting off on it for nearly six months.

Below, read on about how this organic bed has completely transformed my sleep routine in under a year’s time.

This bed delivered straight to my doorstep compressed in a relatively heavy box. The site doesn’t specify the bed’s weight, but I’d estimate it’s at least 30 or 40 pounds since it took some effort to slide it in the house. As my first go-around with a mattress in a box, I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to get it set up. Coyuchi has an in-home setup service available after the bed is delivered, and I opted in to streamline the process. Two people swiftly cut the box open, removed all the packaging from my place, and unraveled the mattress on my bed frame. (FYI: I have a queen size but there are options ranging from twin to California king to meet your needs.) While it inflated in a matter of seconds, I gave it about half the day before laying on it. Even as it firmed up, I didn’t notice any off-gassing smells as it reached its full capacity.

This mattress is designed with GOTS-certified cotton and GOLS organic latex, two global sustainability certifications that guarantee the bed is free of flame retardants and other harmful gasses based on rigorous testing. The brand says this mattress is made with seven layers of these natural materials as well as over 2,400 steel coils. With all this in mind, my first night dozing off on this mattress was a huge relief. As I alluded to before, my old bed was pretty stiff without any frills like pillow top covers or borders to help me sit comfortably on the side of the bed without feeling like I was about to slip off.

Even though it’s not a memory foam mattress, my first impression was that it had a cloudlike feel: soft, yet supportive. Since my biggest concerns in the past were lack of support around my neck and spine, I paid close attention to the pressure relief. Within the first few weeks of sleep, I could sense that this bed had enough give from the inner layers that I didn’t feel like I was laying on a rigid slab of coils. While I’m not a hot sleeper, it also has a quilt-like surface that feels breathable and pliable, like touching my favorite cable knit sweater.

Other minor, thoughtful details made this bed a special one to me. In the months I’ve had this mattress, I changed bed frames from a metal platform with a box spring to a lift-up storage design. Both options were seamless to use with this bed, as I haven’t noticed any sagging either way. I’ve flipped the mattress once and I had an easier time than I thought thanks to the sturdy side straps that helped me lift it. Sure, I have a sheet set and mattress protector covering the bed basically all the time, but the channel-tufted design around the sides, thick brown trim (which gives it that strong edge support), along with the “Coyuchi” label make it a sight for sore eyes whenever laundry day comes around too.

After snoozing peacefully for the last six-plus months, I can honestly say that this is the best mattress I’ve ever had. I rest easy knowing that I’m rounding out my bedroom with an eco-friendly sleep essential that I can keep for years to come. I don’t toss and turn anymore trying to get comfortable, and while I do have the brand’s machine-washable mattress topper, I use it as more of a thin protective feature to prevent stains. I would recommend this bed to anyone who wants a classic hybrid mattress that literally has your back night after night. Since it ships easily and is relatively simple to set up, too, it’s a streamlined option that’s easy to settle into. It also comes with a 25-year warranty to guarantee decades of dreamy sleep.
