Morepen Labs, an API player and makers of health devices, has forayed into weight management programme involving nutrition drinks and on-the-go meals along with live tracking of health parameters through an app, the company informed exchanges on December 10.

The programme, branded as LightLife, combines international ingredients that promise ‘clinical efficacy in managing weight’, in an effort to tap into the India’s emerging weight management market.

“India’s obesity market is expected to grow to $52.3 billion by 2032, reflecting the urgency to address weight management with solutions that are both safe and effective,” Varun Suri, Managing Director of Dr Morepen said. LightLife will offer users live 24×7 tracking, guided diet, and counselling on their health journey at a price point of Rs 599. Suri added that high-fat and high-carb diets have ‘contributed to a surge in obesity and diabetes’ in India.

During the September earnings call, Chairman Shushil Suri had talked about on-boarding Farah Khan as the brand ambassador for the weight loss product. “…the suggestion was that we should launch it around New Year when people have so-called new resolutions to lose weight,” he added.

The company cites National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) to state that 23% of Indian men and 24% of Indian women are overweight or obese, which leads to higher risks of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and joint issues. Dr Morepen says its product promises results without ‘crash diets or harmful fads, or complicated regimens’.

The global economic impact of obesity is projected to rise from $1.96 trillion in 2020 to $4.32 trillion in 2035, as per Statista. It cited a 2023 survey from 31 different countries where obesity was ranked fourth, behind mental health, cancer, and stress.
