John Wick: Chapter 4 set a franchise record in its debut weekend, with a domestic opening of $73.5 million between Friday and Sunday, according to several reports, becoming the third movie released in March to smash a franchise record.

The latest installment in the Keanu Reeves-led franchise grossed $137.5 million worldwide and ranked at No. 1 at the weekend’s domestic box office.

Its domestic opening beat 2014’s John Wick ($14 million), 2017’s John Wick 2 ($30 million) and 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum ($56 million).

John Wick Chapter 4 is the third movie released in the last month to set a record opening in its franchise, joining Scream VI’s $44.5 million opening and Creed III’s $58.6 million debut.

The fourth John Wick cost over $100 million to make, according to Variety. The flick has a 95% rating from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and an A grade on Cinemascore. The film also stars Lace Reddick, who died at age 60 last week from natural causes.

Not every debut this month has drawn franchise-record crowds. Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, a sequel to 2019’s Shazam!, debuted at No. 1 last weekend, but fell short of expectations. Its $30.5 million opening was less than the first Shazam!, which had a $53.5 million debut.
