The gradual reopening of society this summer has prompted a joyful mood in many areas of self expression — makeup included.
While the seasoned glam artist says summer makeup is usually just “gold and bronze,” this season, we can expect to see the aforementioned shades on display — along with a few shade surprises, too.
“Surprisingly fun colours,” Wilson says. “Like copper, blue and green, which aren’t typical summer colours.”
The pandemic has played a role in the changing way that we view makeup, and the vibrant, colourful mood of the warm-weather season undoubtedly stems from that.
“From being inside for so many months not being able to do the things that make us happy, wearing makeup became an afterthought,” Wilson says. “Now that the pandemic is hopefully coming to a slow, now’s the time to pamper yourself and make up for lost time.”
To help achieve the on-trend glowing looks, Wilson points to two limited-edition 5 Couleurs Couture Eyeshadow Palettes from Dior as easy go-tos.
“One is called Dune and the other is called Mirage,” Wilson says. “I like them because you get five colours to play around with, but if you use a blush brush and swirl it through all five colours, you will also get the most beautiful shimmering blush you’ve ever seen.
“Summer beauty is all about ease of the number of products, so I love products that serve more than one purpose.”
This multipurpose tip will undoubtedly come in handy as, according to Wilson, the simplest beauty look of the season that everyone can achieve is a good glow.
“The easiest summer look that everyone can try is beautiful glowing skin,” Wilson says. “Try Dior Backstage Foundation mixed with the Backstage Face and Body Glow.”
After all, Wilson says, summer is all about shine — especially when it comes to the skin.
“Matte skin in the summer is equivalent to seeing someone in a fur coat in the middle of July,” Wilson says.” It just doesn’t work for me. Glowing skin is always in — especially in the summer.”
And gone are the days of heavy-duty contouring for the face. It’s far too warm for that.
“For summer the heavy contouring seems to be done, thank goodness,” Wilson says. “Now, we are using bronzer to mimic the sun’s caress on the skin versus looking like we are going to a gala every day.”
The beauty pro also points to the aforementioned warm gold and copper hues on the eyes and cheeks, as well as a bold mascara in blue to add “a summery pop to the eyes.”
For lips, Wilson recommends using a lip gloss or oil in a pretty — and universally flattering — shade of rose gold for a fuss-free kiss of colour.
As for his top tip to keep summer glam in place despite the heat, Wilson says it’s all about thinking sweatproof.
“To prevent your makeup from disappearing, you should definitely try waterproof products in the summer,” he says. “They work well in heat and humidity. Just make sure you have the right product to remove them.”
