Cardi B Brought Show-Stopping Surrealism to the American Music Awards

Naturally, Cardi B had to bring her fashion A-game to host the 2021 American Music Awards tonight at the Microsoft Theatre in L.A. Though she will likely have several costume changes throughout the evening, the star kicked things off on an epic note by slipping into a surreal, custom design from Schiaparelli’s Daniel Roseberry. Her face may have been concealed underneath that golden mask, but the show-stopping energy was unmistakably Cardi.

The rapper’s accessories really elevated this all-black look into a true head-turner. She wore a sweetheart-neckline gown with a long train that was relatively sleek and simple, but then amped it up (to put it mildly) with golden-nailed gloves, a dramatic black veil, and a metallic opera mask. Her hefty earrings were carved into the shape of sparkly eyes, with bejeweled fingers dangling from them. (Body parts are a continuous theme in Roseberry’s collections; He’s made golden breastplates and briefcases embellished with golden ears.)

This isn’t the first time Cardi has proven she’s a fan of Schiaparelli’s kooky surrealism. She casually wore the label’s giant gold headpiece down the streets of Paris during fashion week. But the bold, one-of-a-kind look was right at home at the AMAs, further proving that she was the right woman to host. Is it too early to declare her the fashion winner of the night?
